 Draft Mauao Historic Reserve Management Plan

The Mauao Trust and Tauranga City Council have established a joint management arrangement for Mauao. Ngā Poutiriao o Mauao is the joint body that leads the management of Mauao.
Jack Thatcher is the Ngāi Te Rangi representative on this body.

The Mauao Historical Reserve Management Plan provides the management framework for Mauao which reflects the needs values and aspirations of Iwi and the Tauranga community and is the first produced under the new joint management.

The first consultation with Tauranga Moana Iwi was held at Huria Marae on the 11th of May, the presentation from this hui (refer to link below).

​Ngāi Te Rangi Elite Taiohi Awards

Nominations are opened for the 2017 Ngāi Te Rangi Taiohi Elite Awards.
One candidate will be nominated from each of the following Marae:
  • Tamapahore Marae,
  • Tahuwhakatiki Marae 
  • Maungatapu Marae
  • Opounui Marae (Te Ngare)
  • Kutaroa Marae (Ngāti Tauaiti)
  • Hungahungatoroa Marae
in recognition of their outstanding achievements both academically, sporting or recreationally over the past financial year.   

Each of the recipients will be nominated by their marae to receive individual awards, awards will be presented at Te Rūnanga o Ngai Te Rangi Iwi Offices on Wednesday 21 June 2017. The Environmental Court Hearing for Matakana Island and the Outstanding Natural Features Landscape(ONFL)  will be be proceeding on Monday.

There will be witnesses who will be providing Legal, Environmental and Planning evidence along with residents and uri of Matakana Island, Dr Hauata Palmer, Paora Stanley, Brendon Taingahue, Jason Murray and Ngaraima Taingahue providing social and cultural perspectives at the hearing.

It is the firm belief that Matakana Island is an outstanding natural features landscape in its entirety, currently only parts of Matakana Island have been accorded this status.

This hearing is open to public to listen and observe.

​Te Rangihouhiri began his journey from Whāngārā to Hakurānui to Whakapau Kōrero to Pōporohuamea where he died. Following his death and after many significant battles, his descendants who became known as Ngāi Te Rangi settled in Tauranga Moana.
