OUTCOMES OF OFFICE OF TREATY                      SETTLEMENTS HUI (OTS) 7 JULY

The Ngāi Te Rangi treaty team met with the Office of Treaty Settlements (OTS) in Wellington on the 7th of July to reiterate our position - that all redress in Tauranga Moana offered to the Hauraki Collective be removed prior to the signing of the Collective's deed and allow for a tikanga process to resolve the issues. The outcomes of the OTS meeting are recorded in the letter below.

               OTS RESPONSE 14 JULY

As stated in the letter, Ngāi Te Rangi anticipated the Minister’s response by Friday 14 July, a response was received stating that the Minister and Paul Majurey have been advised of the Ngāi Te Rangi position and a response will be provided on Monday 17 July

Mana Moana!  Mana Whenua!  Mana Tangata!

What is the dispute?
That the Hauraki Collective are claiming rights in to Tauranga against the wishes of Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Ranginui and Ngāti Pukenga.
For a full list of known redress/rights see this link.
OPPOSED REDRESS LIST
What is the solution?
That Hauraki iwi meet with Tauranga Moana iwi to resolve the dispute in accordance with tikanga Māori.

What is the consequence of Hauraki signing their Deed of Settlement with rights to Tauranga  included?
The signing of the Deed of Settlement is a significant milestone in the Treaty Settlement process. Once the settlement is signed, it will be very difficult for us to seek the withdrawal of any rights that relate to Tauranga. The next step after signing is when the settlement goes through the Parliament process to become law. Once their settlement becomes law Hauraki will gain permanent rights in Tauranga that will empower Hauraki iwi to assert a presence and say over our ancestral lands and waters.

The consequence is that eventually this will lead to Hauraki iwi becoming a recognised iwi of Tauranga. This is the experience of Ngāti Whātua in Auckland. For example, Hauraki iwi are now invited as tangata whenua for powhiri/kaupapa arranged by Council within the heartland of Ngāti Whātua. This is the risk we face in the future if we do nothing now and allow Hauraki to gain these settlement rights. We have maintained the ahi ka of these lands and waters mai rā anō, this is about to change if we do not act now.

Hauraki iwi are already attempting to engage with our local Councils, without our knowledge. Once legislation is passed for Hauraki, the Councils will be obliged to deal with Hauraki iwi in relation to our lands and waters.

What can we do right now to resolve this dispute?
  • INFORM yourself and your whānau about the significance of this issue
  • SUPPORT the mana moana campaigns - advocate for our position and solution, seek the support of MPs and Councillors, encourage Hauraki iwi to withdraw their claims and meet with Tauranga Moana iwi, participate in the mana moana campaigns, contribute a koha, volunteer your services to the mana moana campaign - make contact with Meremaihi Aloua (021) 125 1253

Te Rangihouhiri began his journey from Whāngārā to Hakurānui to Whakapau Kōrero to Pōporohuamea where he died. Following his death and after many significant battles, his descendants who became known as Ngāi Te Rangi settled in Tauranga Moana.
