General Practitioners and Nurse Practitioners

HBU Mobile Health Service

Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Te Rangi Iwi Trust is seeking expressions of interest from General Practitioners and Nurse Practitioners interested in supporting our HBU Mobile Health Service on a flexible, after-hours basis across Tauranga Moana.

We recognise the demands on the primary healthcare workforce and have designed this opportunity to allow clinicians to contribute in a way that works alongside their existing commitments.  This may be as little as one evening per month, occasional shift coverage, or a more regular commitment depending on individual availability and preferred clinic locations.

About our service

Established in 2008, HBU – “How ‘bout You?” – is a mobile, community-based, free afterhours health service that takes primary healthcare directly to whānau across Tauranga Moana.

HBU currently provides afterhours clinics across Katikati, Welcome Bay, Mount Maunganui, Merivale and Pāpāmoa, between 6.00pm and 9.00pm.  The service also supports a range of community based initiatives, including health screening, vaccination programmes and men’s and women’s health clinics.

The service is designed to reach people who may experience barriers to accessing conventional primary healthcare, including cost, work commitments, transport, lack of GP enrolment, or other social and practical factors that make it difficult to access healthcare for themselves or their whānau.

Our unique approach

At the heart of HBU is the development of trust and meaningful relationships with whānau.  Our first priority is to respond appropriately to the immediate health need.  From there, our team works alongside whānau to identify any wider barriers that may be affecting their ability to engage with primary healthcare or prioritise their own and their whānau health needs.

Where appropriate, we support whānau to reengage with their usual GP or support them into enrolment.  Through our wider services and networks, we can also connect whānau with additional health and social support where needed.

We welcome expressions of interest from registered General Practitioners and Nurse Practitioners who:

• Have an interest in improving access to healthcare for whānau and communities;

• Value culturally responsive, relationship based models of care;

• Are comfortable working within a community based and mobile clinical environment; and

• Are interested in providing occasional or regular after-hours clinical support.

There is no requirement to commit to a weekly roster.  Clinicians may nominate the locations, frequency and evenings that best suit their existing work and personal commitments.

We welcome an informal conversation with clinicians who would like to learn more about HBU, our model of care, and how their availability could fit within the service.

We invite clinicians to come and spend an evening with us, meet our whānau, and experience a different way of delivering primary healthcare – taking healthcare to the people.
