The Environmental Court Hearing for Matakana Island and the Outstanding Natural Features Landscape(ONFL)  will be be proceeding on Monday.

There will be witnesses who will be providing Legal, Environmental and Planning evidence along with residents and uri of Matakana Island, Dr Hauata Palmer, Paora Stanley, Brendon Taingahue, Jason Murray and Ngaraima Taingahue providing social and cultural perspectives at the hearing.

It is the firm belief that Matakana Island is an outstanding natural features landscape in its entirety, currently only parts of Matakana Island have been accorded this status.

This hearing is open to public to listen and observe.

​Te Rangihouhiri began his journey from Whāngārā to Hakurānui to Whakapau Kōrero to Pōporohuamea where he died. Following his death and after many significant battles, his descendants who became known as Ngāi Te Rangi settled in Tauranga Moana.
